To Ban or Not To Ban? The EU Digital Future and Freedom of Speech as We Know It

11. March 2021 (14:00-15:00)

The start of 2021 has brought a vivid discussion about freedom of speech on social media platforms. Both the political events of recent months and the acts of law presented by EU policy-makers have come to the focus of public opinion. The global pandemic has also shown the level to which we are, and will surely continue to be, dependent on online distribution channels of ideas.

  • How to protect fundamental rights without impacting negatively innovation, growth, and competitiveness?
  • Is there any other approach than regulation towards establishing online protection of freedom of speech?
  • Is the EU ready to answer the needs of a future digital democratic society?
  • To what extent can the single Member States have an impact on the online marketplace of ideas?

Join us on March 11 at 14:00-15:00 for a virtual debate. The event will be held in English and streamed live on Facebook and Youtube. You can ask questions using Sli.do.

Panelists:

  • Věra Jourová, European Commission Vice-President for Values and Transparency
  • Aura Salla, Public Policy Director, Head of EU Affairs at Facebook
  • Roland Freudenstein, Deputy Director, Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies

Moderator:

  •  Katarzyna Pisarska, Co-Chair of Warsaw Security Forum/Pulaski Foundation, WEF Global Leader Alumna
