Jan Hartl was born in 1951 in Prague. He studied Sociology, Political and Film Science at the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts of Charles University. Throughout his professional life, he was a member of the academic council of the Institute of Sociology and also served on several editorial boards. In 1990, he founded a research institute STEM where he worked as the director until 2015. Four years later, in 1994, Jan Hartl founded STEM/MARK which engages in market and media research. Hartl is also the author and manager of numerous sociological projects. He has been involved in popularization of sociological findings.
