Štefan was the Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy in the second Barroso Commission in 2010-2014. In his diplomatic career, he has held several positions within the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as the First Secretary of Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the United Nations in New York City. Later, he held several executive positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 1998. Then he served as the Czech Ambassador to Lithuania, where the Czech Embassy served as the NATO Contact Point Embassy at the time. In 2000, Štefan Füle accepted the position of the First Deputy Minister of Defence, and later returned to diplomatic service. He had served as Czech Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 2003 to 2005, before being appointed as the Czech Permanent Representative to NATO from 2005 to 2009. He studied at the Charles University in Prague and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations.
